Navy Postal Clerk Rating established 30 Nov 1960

American FlagWelcome to the Navy Postal Clerks Association WebSite
This site and its related Association is for past and present Navy members of the Postal Clerk rate (established 1960) and their families. Also pre and post PC that served as navy postal clerks are welcome as are Marine Corps Postal Clerks, and any officer or civilian employee that served in a postal billet. Any and all family members of a deceased postal clerk are welcome tp join. Please register with the site, registration will grant you access to many advanced website features. Registration is free and is separate from membership in the Association. When you register start use your real name as your user name, the reason being is that the Association is for Navy Postal Clerk and persons with a relationship with the Navy Postal Service. It is establish to promote friendships, renew old acquaintances, and memories. It is not to be anonymous user website. Under other information indicate your PC rate or your association with the Navy Postal System. If you are already registered PLEASE change your user name to your real name.
The association is made up of former, retired and active men and women of the Naval Postal Service who have been serving the fleet since October 1960, and the Mail handlers before them.
There is a myth that the association is a bunch of old Chiefs, this is not a fact as we have PCSN's to PCCM's, serving as little as 2 years to over 30 years, regular Navy as well as reserves.
The purpose of the association is:

  1. To promote the social welfare of the Navy Postal Clerk community.
  2. To conduct programs for charitable and educational purposes.
  3. To sponsor or participate in activities patriotic in nature.
  4. To provide social and recreational activities for it's members.

Along with the above, we also have a goal of keeping the tradition of hard work and dedication of the men and women of the Naval Postal Service and the Mail Handlers before them alive.

Postal Clerks are among the most known people of any command, sometimes maybe not the most liked, but still the best known.

You can wear the a Navy Retired or a Navy ball cap and many times will be told "Hello Shipmate", but wearing the Navy Postal Clerk Association cap, you are more likely to hear "did you know postal clerk so and so" Come on over to the Forums and speak your mind!

If you have any questions about this site, please feel free to contact Mike Bertalan Navy-Postal-Clerk-Association@roadrunner.com

Association News

From the President,
It is official we are going back to Vegas.

When we go out with a request to the Las Vegas Tourist Bureau, they automatically send it to Laughlin too.
So if we get a great proposal from Laughlin we will pass it on to the group for consideration. Laughlin is due to have a major US carrier flying into the Laughlin-Bullhead International Airport starting in 2009.
Most Las Vegas hotel indicated they do not entertain proposal until within 1 year so we may not the exact location until around May of 2009. Shooting for date of Monday 4 May 2010 to Thursday 7 May 2010 Night of Banquet,
Will update website if any new information.

ReunionNavy Postal Clerk Association
The reunion is over, believe all a had good time. Below is a review by PCCM Gil Hough USN Ret also check out the some phots from the reunion taken and edited by PCCS John Spellman USN Ret. You can view the photos at "reunion liks" on the menu at the left or click on The Banquet or At the Bar-B-Q To see who is who in the photos click here

Note from Gil

Aloha to our members!

Our Reunion was held in Virginia Beach, Virginia from June 4-8, 2008. However, it was really over at the conclusion of the banquet on the night of June 7th.

June 4th was a day of check in and figuring out who is who because our appearances have deteriorated over the years (mostly not so good). Life’s a beach shipmate’s.

June 5th: Free day to visit Norfolk and Virginia Beach. The Postal Service did a special cancellation of our event. However, most of our membership cancelled so many letters that they did not really give a rip.

June 6th: Our business meeting was conducted; a motion was made to continue our officers as is without change. A motion was made and seconded, thanks for your continued outstanding performance one and all. Gil Hough agreed to help out on the information sharing side of the house.

The main topic of the meeting was to determine where the next NPCA reunion will be held in 2010 during the first two weeks of May. Our by-laws indicate it will be held on the West Coast. Motions were made for the following four areas:

Reno, Nevada Las Vegas, Nevada Laughlin, Nevada San Diego, California

It was decided that only members paid through 2008 or above can vote and are entitled to a primary and secondary vote. Your address label will have the year you are paid through, if it does not have a number, your dues are now payable. You will have thirty (30) days from the date of this letter to cast your vote either by mail or e-mail to Mike Bertalan:

Dues are $20.00 for two (2) years. If you are not paid up, please remit your dues with your vote to:

Mike Bertalan, 2063 W. 103rd St., Cleveland, OH 44102 E-Mail: roto-ice@roadrunner.com.

Additionally, a motion was made and seconded to make Mr. Van B. Bean an honorary member of our association. Welcome aboard Van!

We were very fortunate to have the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Supply Community CMDCM (SW) James A. Collins and PCCM Ron Guyton as our guests to bring us up to date on the Postal Clerk Community. Jim was just appointed as the Force Master Chief of the Naval Supply Systems Command (former PCCM). Ron is the Community Manager of the Postal Clerk and other supply ratings. He is located at BUPERS in Millington, Tennessee. He determines where billets are needed and how many personnel can be advanced. Both of them have joined our association and are our very first two active duty members! I have attached to this letter an overview of where the ratings are headed. However, Jim indicates the merger with Store Keeper is a done deal and the rating will be known as Logistics Specialist (LS). One additional piece of information is money orders will no longer be sold on any ship!

We had a great Bar-B-Q at Iron Mike Patras’s house in Virginia Beach from 1300-1600 hours. We had chicken, pork, hot dogs, hamburgers and a load of other delicious items. Master Chef Terry Baardsgaard and his trusted assistant prepared the meal in sweltering 100 degree weather. Great job Terry.

The final event of the evening was a casino night in our hospitality room. George Piette sponsored the event along with his fellow Knights of Columbus pals. The bad news was the dealers thought they were suppose to let everybody win and everyone won. Mike Bertalan broke into a deep sweat because he thought we may go bankrupt. Fortunately for us, most gave their winnings back.

June 7th: This was our banquet and the names of our fellow “shipmates forever” were read by Michael P. Dwyer.

June 8th: Travel home.

A great big Bravo Zulu and thanks to our hosts, Michael “Iron Mike” and Maggie Patras; Michael P. Dwyer and Liz; Ron and Marie McEntee for taking on the logistics of the reunion. The same to Terry Barrdsgarrd and all others who did more than just drink beer!

OPEN LETTER FROM PCCM GIL HOUGH USN Retired
Website

News Story by: PCCM Gil Hough, USN (Ret)

“ Why Join the NPCA Association”

The Navy Times dated October 25, 1960, nearly forty six (46) years ago announced those selected for the Postal Clerk (PC) rating and it was born; 644 personnel switched ratings to become the elite of the elite; those who served and cared.

It seems the older I become, the more nostalgic I become; I was seventeen (17) in 1960. One thing remains certain is that I was proud to serve my fellow sailors and provide valuable morale from home. I have great memories of our rating and friendships that I have made over the past 46 years.

WebsiteJust received word from Shipmates PC1 Pat Huston, and PCCM Gil Hough that Shipmate and friend PCC Terry Nelson passed away on 10 Dec 2006,He is going to be cremated and have his ashes dispersed from a USS ship in the Pacific. May God Rest His Great Soul!
The burial will initially be handled by the United States Navy Mortuary Affairs office toll-free at (1-888-647-6676, and select option 4). in Great lakes. If anybody wants more info.

It is with heavy heart I must report the passing of Jim MacDonald
Mac was a retired Army Master Sergeant who just retired as the senior civilian at JMPAPAC in San Francisco, California. Macs first involvement with the Navy was at Fort Benjamin Harrison where he was instrumental in setting the Joint Military Postal School. Without Mac I am not sure the Joint Postal School would have ever worked. He made the effort to learn the unique problems of the Navy postal service and the Navy; he helped implement them into the course. From his experiences at the school he was always aware of the Navy needs while at JMPAPAC both as a MSGT and latter as the senior civilian.

PCCM Gil Hough (ret) has been scouring the original Postal Clerk selectees and doing a cross match with the VA Cemeteries to determine if they may have left us. you click on "read More" below to see the see the list of PC he has come up with. they all have been added to our SHIPMATES FOREVER page

  Navy is Changing
NavyThe Navy is changing. The Navy Department is not only having the PC and SH merged to SK in the very near future.but has made several rating merger: Radioman (RM) and Data Processor (DP) were merged and the Information Technologist (IT) rating was created. MS or Mess Specialist was changed back to CS and is known as Culinary Specialist. Disbursing Clerk (DK) and Personnelman(PN) were merged and the Personnel Services rating was created (PS). I found out today this is a five year plan and at the conclusion the PS rating will be eliminated because all functions can be done without a PS rating. Other news the DOD wants wants to turn all overseas Military mail over to private contractors. read the DoD propsals The Uniform is also changing
